About LEAFS

This event provides an educational avenue for those activities that don’t fit into a typical classroom or university setting—namely Equestrian, Agriculture, Forestry and Coursing. We’ll have both hands-on and lecture style classes. For a sampling of previous classes, check out last year’s event site. If your class relates in some way to equestrian, agriculture, forestry, or coursing, we welcome it!

Patuxent River Park is a scenic site, with wooded trails as well as open fields. There is the river nearby, as well as streams nestled in the wooded hills. This is a great site to lead a saunter, teach a class over a fire, introduce a special interest topic, coordinate a craft, or whatever else you can dream of!

Classes

In-Person Classes

Are you interested in teaching at LEAFS? Or perhaps running a solar, facilitating a round table discussion, or coordinating a materials swap-meet. No matter what it is, please reach out!

We welcome a wide range of class submissions—if it can be tied to equestrian, agriculture, forestry, or coursing, we’d love you to teach it. If you aren’t sure if your class is suitable, reach out to the relevant Activity or Track Leader.

Virtual Classes

We are looking at the possibility of offering a few virtual classes per track in the weeks leading up to in-person LEAFS! If you are interested in teaching virtually, please reach out to the applicable track lead.

Track Leads 

We have a core team of volunteers who are organizing and coordinating all teachers and activity leaders in their area of expertise. Please reach out to them with any questions or concerns:

General Equestrian Lead: Epy Pengelly, Armiger (they/them)

We aim to bring in specialized teachers to focus on mounted archery, jousting, Ride Before the Sultan, and more! While there are classes on horseback at LEAFS, there will also be non-riding equestrian classes. These can be classes on foot about riding topics, as well as historic equestrian topics. We also welcome classes on weapons and armor making, equipment making, arrow construction, and other such topics. Horses must have a negative coggins test.

Archery Lead: Noble Norbert Dolittle

Agriculture Lead: Dama Mariana Ruiz de Medina (she/her)

Forestry Lead: Doña Isabel de Tarragona (she/her)

Calling all foresters and friends: Come share your skills and knowledge at the second installment of LEAFs!  Interested in leading an herb walk or saunter?  Want to show off your kit or your mean fire cooking skills?  Handy with starting a fire?  Contact the Forestry Track Lead with your ideas today! 

Coursing Lead: Lady Martine de Bruges (she/her)

If you have a historic topic on coursing (or generally dogs) that you’d like to teach, or if you would like to be more actively involved in planning/coordinating, please reach out to Lady Martine. Dogs must be 1 year of age, in good health, and have their rabies, DAPP, and bordetella vaccines. See the handbook for full policies and procedures.

General Arts & Sciences Lead: Mu’allimah Tala al-Zahra (she/her)

We’ll have a Maker’s Green, A&S Display, and Library resources. If any of these topics interest you and/or you’d like to participate in them, please contact Tala!

Volunteering

Volunteers make our events a success! Please email Epy Pengelly, Armiger if you’d like to volunteer. Roles sought include teachers, gate volunteers, information point attendees, set up, tear down, and more!

Meals

If you are interested in coordinating a meal during LEAFS, please reach out to Epy. We are looking for breakfasts, lunches, and dinners. This is a great fundraising opportunity for your guild, activity, household, etc!
